This paper starts from the lived experiences of disabled people. Based on a series of interviews with disabled individuals and representatives of government departments and disability organisations, it argues that the current legislation-dominated approach to bringing about positive social change is only a start on the journey to eradicating the subtle but sometimes life-destroying impact of disablism

This report is intended as a tangible record of the 13th ICASA (International Conference on AIDS and STDs in Africa) conference: what was said, by whom and when. The report summarizes the highlights, beginning with the conference's history and moves on to themes and objectives. It presents the main issues emerging from the conference through the eyes of the rapporteur teams, key correspondents and selected participants. The focus then shifts to a brief description of the on-site newspaper Pamoja News and the skills building sessions, and finally, the rapporteurs' presentations. By documenting the proceedings of the 13th ICASA it is hoped that the momentum in collective struggle against HIV/AIDS will be maintained, through ongoing strategies of partnership, stakeholder collaboration, and cross and multi-sectoral approaches

Study of the discrimination faced by people living with HIV/AIDS. The study generated both qualitative and quantitative data. Its findings indicate that AIDS-related discrimination is prevalent in every sector of society. Age and educational background do not affect the level of discrimination faced, but sex, state of health and marital status do. Women are more likely than men to experience discrimination within the family and community because of their HIV status

This book aims to strengthen the capacity of different actors to address HIV/AIDS at local level. Experiences worldwide contributed to a selection of techniques and practices for the toolkit. It aims to help facilitators to support audiences to analyse their own situation in order to establish needs and priorities for their planning. Part one contains 20 techniques for application in different stages of the planning cycle. The purpose and use of each technique is described, as well as practical guidelines on how to proceed. Part two contains 50 practices used to address one or more specific problems. The practices are grouped according to four categories: prevention, care and treatment, support and mitigation, and partnership and coordination

This manual suggests that the stigma and discrimination around HIV & AIDS in health facilities has various causes including a lack of knowledge and understanding among staff about the modes and risk of HIV transmission and judgemental attitudes and assumptions about the way of life of people with HIV. It uses participatory training methodologies to modify health care workers' attitudes while giving them practical knowledge and tools to assure client rights and meet their own needs for a safe working environment. It suggests a 2-day training schedule to cover the 16 sessions offered
