This report of a study completed by the ILO in Malawi, South Africa and Zambia, examines access for persons with disabilities to acquire training and obtain employment. The study finds that if given opportunities to learn new skills, persons with disabilities are equally as likely to contribute to society and the overall economy as non-disabled persons. Recommendations are provided for government and non-government organisations. This report would be useful for governments, NGOs and practitioners interested in strategies for skills acquisition and work for persons with disabilities in southern Africa

This report discusses the programme Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The aim of this programme was to support economic development through skilled technical and vocational education and training in the Sub-Saharan African region. The report provides a summary of the TVET programme and highlights the competition that results from technological changes which requires higher levels of skills and productivity. Case studies and statistical analyses from several countries are presented. This report would be useful for practitioners interested in skills development in Sub-Saharan Africa

The article describes an innovative project called Women Connect!, in which the Pacific Institute for Women's Health worked with women's non-governmental organisations in Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to optimise their use of new ICTs. The project aimed at bringing about greater empowerment of women through the effective use of communication strategies in media and technology, through collaboration, communications, training and information sharing, and to help women's organisations strengthen their ability to achieve their own objectives, especially in the areas of women's health and well-being. The project focused on strategies to enhance NGOs rather than focusing on the mechanics of connection

This book reviews recent experiences in strengthening local institutions, governmental and non-governmental alike, in six countries on five continents. It examines various aspects of the tensions between international initiatives to save lives or to reconstruct the fabric of societies, and the parallel and sometimes competing international commitment to "capacitation" - to building longer term skills locally. The last chapter reviews the case studies and attempts to draw out the learning in terms of conceptual, operational, political and motivational issues
