Social statistics are a difficult task when comparing countries that are using different languages and have different social systems. The experience from the European Union shows that there are ways around this problem: but the different countries have to agree first on a conceptual framework, standard instruments and common methods of analysis. The example of the European Union describes a possible use of these tools
